Description

Over the past two decades, therapeutic advances have continuously improved the management of multiple myeloma, opening up a genuine prospect of cure. However, certain treatment-related side effects remain frequent and may compromise therapeutic efficacy. This is particularly the case for venous thromboembolism, whose risk persists despite the use of pharmacological prophylaxis and validated risk-assessment scores. To date, no biomarker is available to better stratify this risk and tailor antithrombotic prophylaxis accordingly.
This project aims to evaluate the relevance of measuring proteins involved in the cellular stress response — known as the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) — in a cohort of patients treated for multiple myeloma at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York. Since the UPR has an established role both in myeloma plasma cells and in cancer-associated thrombosis in solid tumors, the objective of this project will be to determine whether the dosage of these proteins could serve as a meaningful tool to anticipate the thrombotic risk in patients undergoing treatment for their myeloma.
