Making the case for redefining PCL as a type of high-risk myeloma
In an article published in The Lancet Haematology, S. Vincent Rajkumar, MD, and Shaji Kumar, MD, make the case for redefining plasma cell leukemia (PCL) as a subcategory within high-risk multiple myeloma (MM) — based on the new Consensus Genomic Staging criteria for high-risk MM published in 2025, broadening of PCL definitions, and the unmet need for myeloma clinical trials that include patients with PCL.

Hematology Society of Taiwan publishes consensus recommendations for MM treatment
The Hematology Society of Taiwan published consensus-based recommendations for management of MM. The guidelines, published in the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association, consider the regional healthcare system, balance treatment efficacy, accessibility, and reimbursement constraints, and emphasize individualized treatment.

Recommendations published for implementing SDM in myeloma care
Based on a mixed-methods research project initiated by Myeloma Patients Europe (MPE), an umbrella organization of European patient groups, researchers and MPE members developed recommendations for implementing shared decision-making (SDM) in myeloma care. The study was published in PLOS One. A separate survey-based analysis in PLOS One involving the same group of researchers outlined awareness gaps among patients and healthcare providers around SDM.

Real-world data highlight the importance of bridging/holding therapies
Refining bridging/holding therapies based on pre-infusion response can reduce myeloma burden and mitigate toxicity following BCMA-directed CAR-T therapy, according to a real-world retrospective analysis published in Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. In a retrospective real-world analysis of recipients of CAR-T therapy for relapsed/refractory MM (RRMM), 70% of whom had achieved at least a partial response to bridging therapy, median progression-free survival was comparable between cilta-cel and ide-cel recipients. In the report in British Journal of Haematology, authors suggest that the use of highly effective bridging therapy may account for these findings.

Substantial real-world infection burden prevalent in TCE patients
An analysis of US claims data found substantial infection burden in triple drug-class–exposed (TCE) patients with RRMM receiving non-T cell redirecting therapies. The study, published in Blood Cancer Journal, showed a weighted average infection rate of 63.5% and a 52-week cumulative severe infection rate of 44.9%, underscoring the importance of infection prophylaxis.

AI framework can help classify hematologic cancers
A report in npj digital medicine describes the development of an interpretable multi-model artificial intelligence (AI) framework for classifying hematological malignancies, based on cytomorphological assessment of bone marrow aspirates and peripheral blood smears. The AI framework, developed using a dataset that included17,000 paired digitized pathology images of bone marrow aspirates and blood smears, helped categorize samples into eight blood cancer subtypes, including MM.

Why Become a Member

The International Myeloma Society is a professional, scientific, and medical society established to bring together clinical and experimental scientists involved in the study of myeloma. The purpose of this society is to promote research, education, clinical studies (including diagnosis and treatment), workshops, conferences, and symposia on all aspects of multiple myeloma worldwide.

The IMS is a membership organization comprised of basic research scientists, and clinical investigators in the field along with physicians and other healthcare practitioners.
